St Matthew's Church in the late C19
St Matthew's Church, Lavender Hill

St Matthew's was the original church in the parish. At the
top of Rush Hill Road, it opened in 1877. When the new parish was created in 1895 it was assumed that St Matthew's would become the parish church but the authorities ruled that it was not suitable. St Barnabas' was built as a result but worship continued at St Matthew's until 1941. Flats were built on the site in the early 1960s. Communion plate from St Matthew's continues to be used at St Barnabas'. The last member of
St Barnabas' to have worshipped at St Matthew's died in 2005.
